Awarded to applicants who by their own actions and/or activities are increasing awareness and inspiring others to embrace:

• Clean technologies
• Eliminate waste
• Live sustainably
• Protect the environment

Examples of activities and programs where applicants may have demonstrated leadership and a significant contribution to Sustainability, via their community group or workplace, could include, but not be limited to:

• Leading community gardens
• Leading wildlife rescue and/or wildlife protection
• Leading tree planting/habitat regeneration
• Acting on clothing waste and other recycling initiatives
• Acting as a champion for waste avoidance
• Leading fauna surveys
• Leading clean-up campaigns/operations

Please note that ongoing actions (e.g. ongoing contribution to clean-up campaigns over the period of a year) will be assessed more favourably than one-off actions (e.g. one beach clean-up day only).

Awarded to First Nations applicants who display leadership within their community.

Examples of demonstrable and positive leadership could include, but not be limited to,

• leading/delivering activities in their community.

Awarded to applicants whose advocacy and/or activity are not only inclusive of people from underrepresented, diverse or marginalised backgrounds, but encourage, support and normalise inclusion within their community. Ideally, the applicant should themselves be a representative of an underrepresented group, or an ally of an underrepresented group*, who is leading and advocating for change.

*e.g. people with a disability, people of colour, women interested in STEM, LSES, LGBTIQA+, Culturally & Linguistically Diverse, refugee background, remotely located, first in family to attend university

Examples of demonstrable and positive leadership could include, but not be limited to:

• Creation of or adaptation of activities/events to be more inclusive of people with a disability
• Leading fund and/or awareness raising to better support and/or include people from any marginalised group backgrounds (e.g. ethnic, LGBTQIA+, LSES, victims of violence/crime, refugee, remoteness)
• Leading support groups, e.g. Pride groups
• Promoting gender equity
• Initiating safe/accessible spaces in their community
• Mobilising peers to participate in positive change action for the benefit of underrepresented or marginalised groups
• Leading activities that grow tolerance and acceptance of diversity
• Leading activity that addresses and lessens stereotypes

1. The applicant must have demonstrated impactful leadership in one of the three Scholarship categories (see FAQ above).
2. The applicant must be aged between 19 and 25 (inclusive) at the time of application.
3. The applicant must live in the City of Canning.
4. The applicant is applying to Murdoch University after completing a minimum of 12 months post-secondary school, and meets the University requirements for a bachelor's degree course. For more information, see Pathways to Uni.
5. They must be a domestic student (an Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, Permanent Resident, or on a Humanitarian Visa).
6. They must be on a pathway to gain entry into a Murdoch University course, and meet English Language Competency (ELC) requirements. More information on entry requirements can be found here.

Applications for the City of Canning stream are submitted directly by the applicant via our online application form.

To complete your application, you will need to have ready:

1. Your personal details, including proof of residency within the City of Canning
2. Your course of interest at Murdoch University
3. A personal statement outlining the:
   • activity you have undertaken,
   • your motivation for doing so,and
   • the impact it has had
4. One reference in support of your application (for example, from a community leader, employer, teacher, mentor or coach - referees cannot be immediate family members)

The online application process will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Any undergraduate course at Murdoch University. Please note, some courses are not available for mid-year intake.

Applications for study commencing Semester One, 2027 close 31 January 2027. Applications for study commencing Semester Two, 2027 close 31 May 2027.

On receipt of your application, the Murdoch University Scholarships team will check your eligibility and assess your application and references.

If you are successful in your application you will receive a Scholarship offer. You will need to receive and accept an offer into a Murdoch University course to receive the Scholarship payments.

The payment of scholarship instalments commences from week 7 of each respective semester after the financial census date, subject to recipients satisfying both the enrolment (full-time study load of 9 credit points or greater) and satisfactory academic progression requirements.

The scholarship will be paid over three years: $4,000 per annum at $2,000 per Semester, regardless of the degree length.

The $500 City of Canning equipment grant will be paid separately as a one-off payment to support the purchase of equipment required for university, such as a laptop, textbooks or other study essentials. This payment typically occurs from Week 7 onwards following the financial census date.

Yes. The Scholarship is deferrable for up to two Semesters, by request and in accordance with the Ngala Kwop Biddi Brighter Futures Scholarship - Melville x Canning Terms & Conditions.
