Murdoch University Library has come together to develop a shared purpose statement. This statement outlines our aims to support our diverse community and the evolving needs of students, staff and researchers.

Our shared purpose

Our Library provides equitable access to information, resources, and skills, supporting students, staff, researchers, and the broader community. We facilitate knowledge creation and curation, contributing to individual, societal, and global progress. By offering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment, we empower our community to participate in academic and civil life, fostering a love for learning and critical thinking. Our goal is to enhance the university's reputation, preserve valuable/unique collections, and be recognised as a strategic collaborator in showcasing Murdoch scholarship and research.

Who was Geoffrey Bolton?

Former Chancellor and esteemed historian Professor Geoffrey Bolton AO was one of Murdoch University’s most iconic figures. As an eminent historian and socio-political commentator, Professor Bolton immersed himself in the history of Western Australia and its people. Many of his published works can be found in the Library’s Research Portal, and items including Professor Bolton’s academic regalia and personal memorabilia can be found in the History of Murdoch University Collection.

In 2016 the main Library at Murdoch’s South Street campus was named in his honour.

Geoffrey Bolton is the patron saint of Western Australian history. No one has done more to promote the study of Western Australian history and encourage new and thought provoking interpretations of its content.
Hon. Geoff Gallop AC
