Peace studies

Australian Peace Committee (WA branch) Collection

The Australian Peace Committee (WA branch) was established in the 1970’s as a local branch of the Australian Peace Committee for Détente, Disarmament and Development (APC), a national organisation affiliated to the World Peace Council. The collection consists of minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings and ephemera relating to this organisation.

Betty Daly-King Collection

Betty Daly-King (1931-2020) was a life-long political activist. She was a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) (WA branch), the People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) (WA branch), the Down to Earth Movement and other organisations. Betty was also instrumental in establishing the Peace and Conflict Studies course at Murdoch University in 1976. The collection consists of correspondence and various papers relating to Betty’s political activism and the Peace and Conflict Studies course at Murdoch University.

Betty McIntosh Collection

Elizabeth (Betty) McIntosh (1928-2015) was a member of People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) (WA branch) and President of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) (WA branch). Her husband, Gordon McIntosh was an ALP Senator for Western Australia from 1974 to 1987. The collection consists of correspondence and various papers relating to Betty’s political activism.

Clive Hamer Collection

Clive Hamer AM (1923-2015) was the fourth headmaster of Wesley College, serving from May 1965 to December 1983.
The collection is comprised of newsletters, flyers and personal documents relating to the anti-Vietnam War cause and the Seventh State movement.

Dee Margetts Collection

Dee Margetts was a member of the Australian Senate from 1993 to 1999 and a member of the WA Legislative Council from 2001 to 2005, representing the Greens (WA).  She was also a co-ordinator of the People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) (WA branch) from 1988 to June 1991. The collection consists of correspondence and various papers relating to Dee’s political career and activism.

John Clements Collection

Harold (John) Godric Clements (1908-1985) was an oral historian, peace activist and social historian. He was an ABC radio announcer from 1939 to 1945, a member of the Communist Party (until 1968) and a long-time President of the Australian Peace Council (WA branch). The collection consists of oral history interviews conducted and recorded by John Clements from the 1950's to 1980's.

People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) (WA branch) Collection

The People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) (WA branch) was formed in 1981 to work for the termination of operations and the dismantling of facilities, which contributed to preparations for nuclear war. The collection consists of correspondence, monographs, newsletters, submissions, flyers, pamphlets, posters and material banners relating to this organisation.

Shane Guthrie Collection

Shane Guthrie is a life-long political activist and was co-ordinator of the People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) (WA branch) from September 1991 to winter 1992. The collection consists of correspondence and various papers relating to Shane’s political activism.

Vivienne Abraham Collection

Vivienne Abraham (1920-2003) was active in a number of peace, pacifist and conscientious objector support groups from the 1940’s to 1989. She was an office holder of many organisations, including the Australian Peace Pledge Union (Victoria) and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) (Australian section). The collection consists of monographs, pamphlets and journals related to Vivienne’s activism.

Theology

Francis Byrne Collection

Francis Byrne is a journalist, writer and Benedictine monk. The collection consists of materials used in the writing of "A hard road: Brother Frank Nissi, 1888-1980: a life service to the aborigines of the Kimberleys", manuscript collections of poetry, short stories, personal writings and two published local history works. The collection also contains audio cassettes and photographs.

Western Australian Council of Churches Noonkanbah Documents

The collection consists of various pamphlets, reports, photocopies of newspaper articles and letters to newspapers concerning Aboriginal sacred sites on Noonkanbah Station and surrounding areas. The documents also cover the involvement of Uniting Church clergy in the August 1980 blockade of a convoy at Noonkanbah Station in order to prevent drilling and other mining activities by AMAX in areas considered by the Yungngora Community to be sacred.

World Council of Churches Delegation Documents

In 1981, a World Council of Churches delegation visited Broome and the Benedictine mission at Kalumbaru. This collection of documents consists of photocopies of various newspaper articles, letters to newspapers, minutes of a meeting and letters correspondence relating to that visit.

Wicca

Simon Goodman Collection

Simon Goodman (aka Ian Watts) (1951-1991) was instrumental with the Australian wicca scene during the 1970’s, being a catalyst for the formation of a number of groups (including the “Covanentus Quercus”), Pagan festivals and the Occult Reference Centre based in Canberra. The collection consists of books, documents, newspaper clippings, post cards, tarot cards, video cassettes and audio cassettes.
