Immerse yourself in digital news and journalistic content creation, learning to report accurately on important issues while producing podcasts, video shorts, social media reels, data visualisations and multimedia stories.

In a world inundated with information, effective journalistic skill and content creation are powerful tools that can break through the noise and help shape public discourse. Through rigorous training and newsroom simulation, Murdoch University journalism students learn to investigate, research and report the news on various media platforms.

Along with innovative content production practices and the use of artificial intelligence, students are also taught traditional journalistic foundations, including news writing, investigations, crime reporting, media literacy and techniques for verifying and spotting disinformation.

This blend of old and new equips aspiring journalists with a sought-after skill set.

An exciting career where curiosity meets opportunity

Unlike traditional desk jobs, journalism and content creation offers an exciting career where no two days are the same.  Student journalists take on important stories, that include working with the community, travelling and interviewing celebrities, politicians and sporting greats.

Graduates then move into a dynamic industry experiencing exponential growth - particularly in areas such as podcasting - and are sought after not just in newsrooms but in the corporate and not-for-profit world too.  After all, the skill to critically analyse and ethically report has never been more valuable.

What to expect when you study Journalism and content production

The Journalism major gives students the opportunity to work in an online newsroom where the core of the program considers the press and news media as a powerful societal force.  With a focus on creating content with integrity and grounded in facts, students will gain a portfolio of published works by the end of the course.

From your first year, award-winning reporters and experienced academics will teach you how to write accurately, conduct interviews and produce content in state-of-the-art labs and a newsroom.

The “fourth estate” is at the core of the program, with a focus on reporting and creating content with integrity that is grounded in facts and ethical considerations.

You will learn the power of credible sources and verification, how to gather evidence to expose wrong-doing and the ability to think on your feet in a landscape where social media and cross-platform capabilities are all part of the training.

In your final year, you will produce a portfolio of published work for the independent Quenda news website, as you build a strong list of contacts that empower you to inform and advocate for the truth.

Students can also immerse themselves in exchange programs and international experiences as they develop the skills to critically analyse and report on the world around them.

Journalism as a career was one of the best moves I ever made, go in with an open mind, this degree opens doors that you didn’t see coming.
