Our community

At Murdoch, we work with people and organisations in the real-world to stay relevant and prepare our students for their future careers. Throughout our programmes, lecturers link their teaching to problems and technology that students will be seeing when they graduate.

Our degrees afford the opportunity for students to collaborate in teams to plan, develop, and deliver meaningful solutions for and in liaison with industry stakeholders. There are also opportunities for workplace learning and internships throughout our programmes. We work with an industry advisory board to make sure our programmes are relevant and prepare graduates for now and the future. Much of our research is in collaboration with partners from industry or government developing new approaches to the creative use of technology.

We are committed to making IT education accessible to everyone. To achieve this, we support outreach initiatives that encourage people from all backgrounds to consider IT as a career. We also offer various pathways to our programs, including flexible study options and recognition of prior learning.

IT is an international profession, and we have staff and students from all over the world working together in our school, with regular international visitors and exchanges. We are always happy to hear from community organisations and companies interested in working with us – particularly developing partnerships in the areas of sustainability, employability of our graduates and widening access to IT education and tools.

Ways to Engage with us

To discuss any of these approaches, or new ones, and how they could fit your needs please get in touch via ITengagement@murdoch.edu.au or phone (08)9360 6563.

Student Projects -At both undergraduate and postgraduate level, these projects normally last for 1 semester with 3-5 students from different majors. These projects are offered in both semesters in Perth (February - June and July - October), and in one or more of the trimesters in Singapore or Dubai. We have standard agreement that means that IP rests with the client although students can use it for their university presentations etc.

Internships - These can happen any time of year, normally in units of 150 hours of work for both undergraduate and postgraduate.

Consultancy - Murdoch staff and research students are available to work on consultancy projects - this may involve research or teaching in different areas.

Joint research project applications - We are always keen to partner with industry and community groups for funded project applications. We can also support upskilling of staff with research degrees or other qualifications, and identify projects that may be suitable for thesis work by our students.

Bespoke training/education - We have capacity to set up micro-credentials or other short courses to help develop the workforce in IT skills.

Staff Exchanges and shared appointments - Many of our academic staff have come from industry, and we welcome the opportunity to keep up to date by spending time with our partners and vice versa. Informal contacts can often be very productive in term of developing new ideas.

Scholarships - Scholarships and prizes for students can help develop links between students and our partners while they are studying and particularly support the recruitment and retention of under-represented groups to increase diversity.

Outreach - Before young people leave school, many of them have decided where they want their careers to go. By reaching out into schools we can help put IT on the horizon as a potential career path for students who may have never considered it. We welcome collaborative efforts to set up these events and bring along our staff and current students.
