Our academic team conduct world-leading research spanning diverse areas across agricultural science and animal health.
Crop and food innovation
Our team is working at the forefront of innovation for major broadacre and horticultural crops to improve yield, quality, and enhance tolerance and protection from biological and environmental stresses. Students have the opportunity to learn from and work with experts working at the cutting edge of crop genomics, genetics, transgenics, gene editing, molecular biology and physiology, soil and water management, new agricultural technologies including remote sensing and robotics, and food technology.
Sustainable farming systems
Our team is addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring the growing human population has access to safe and nutritious food without degrading water, land and soils. Students will be learning from experts in sustainable crop and pasture production, innovative grazing systems and crop rotations, and biological nitrogen fixation that can improve productivity whilst minimising impact on the environment.
Animal production, health and welfare
Our team works together with farmers and industry to deliver world-leading research focussed on sustainable livestock production. A key strength of our team is the focus across the entire supply-chain, from farm through to consumer, ensuring that are livestock industries are productive, profitable and sustainable. Students in our school will learn from researchers working at the forefront livestock health and management, welfare, nutrition, genetics and meat science.
Biosecurity and One Health
Our team is conducting world-leading research on animal health and biosecurity challenges that threaten animals, plants, humans and our shared environment. Students will learn from experts in diseases and pests affecting animals, plants, crops, grains and horticulture products. Our research supports the growth and sustainability of agricultural production systems worldwide, with a strong focus on ensuring that Australian agricultural industries remain productive, sustainable and able to enjoy market access that benefits the Australian economy.
Western Australia State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre (SABC)
The SABC is the collaborative university Centre for R&D in agricultural and veterinary biotechnology in Western Australia. It provides platform technologies and world class equipment and facilities for R&D in agricultural biotechnology to researchers from universities, state government and industry. The Centre’s vision is to be an eminent, internationally recognised centre for research and development in agricultural and veterinary biotechnology.
